The City Steam Jazz Band is a West Country band which was formed in Exeter in the mid 1980s. We aim to play good foot-tapping New Orleans and Dixieland tunes in the Trad style in pubs and clubs, at weddings, in street parades - wherever people want us in fact. The band usually plays with a traditional six piece line-up of trumpet, clarinet, trombone, banjo, double bass and drums.

Sometimes we are asked to play with a smaller four piece group, leaving out the drums and trombone. This group goes by the name of the
City Steam Hot Four  and is ideal for indoor venues like restaurants or private parties.

At other times, when we are asked to move about, it is not possible to use a large string double bass, so we use a brass sousaphone instead, and the group is then known as the
City Steam Footloose Four.
