What sort of music do we play?

Our style of music

Our style is loosely based on the music of the 1920s to 1940, ranging from the marches and rags of New Orleans, through the popular songs and dances of the period to more modern rocking blues and songs with a lively latin feel to them. We respond to the occasion and to any requests from those at the gig and even play the occasional waltz if requested!

Listen to us playing

In December 2008 we produced our latest CD, "Hot Ginger and Dynamite". This title is taken from the lyrics of "Nagasaki", the first track on the CD. The cover design is a small section of our band waistcoats. The CD has been well received and is on sale at gigs for £10. This is what John Leonard wrote about the recording in the March 2009 edition of the Devon and Cornwall Jazz Diary.

"What an interesting band!  Relaxed and swinging from the first to the last, City Steam Jazz Band immediately draws one's attention to its changing presentation of numbers and thoughtful arrangements.  ...... a balanced and varied set - both upbeat and laid back. .... Altogether this is a very successful package, joyous listening and foot tapping music."

The CD was recorded at The Music Mill at Newton Abbot www.musicmill.co.uk and a good job they made of it too. We have to give a big thank you to Shaun and Digby for their expert help. See the Picture Gallery for pictures of the recording session.
